Meet Entries This Week

We have some exciting events coming up this week as we cap off the dual meet and invitational season and head into the championship phase of the year. Tomorrow we host Morse, our perennial rival at 3:30 and then on Friday, the juniors and seniors compete in the always exciting Escondido Invitational, and then on Saturday, a pair of our sophomore boys compete in the Frosh Soph County Championships, which highlights the best of the best of high school underclassmen. Entries are listed below.

Girls Win HISTORIC Meet Vs. Cathedral

Yes, the girls team finally beat the Cathedral Catholic Girls Track Team for the first time since 2011. It's Cathedral's first dual meet loss in over 7 years. WOW! See results in Athletic.net on the right. More coming soon......

In the meantime, here are the entries for the Jim Cerveny Invitational tomorrow at Mission Bay HS. I know that there are several of you that are entered that can't make it. That's ok. If you can make it, please give it your best shot. We are really beginning to race well. Some others of you that are not entered can race instead of the athletes that can't make it. Let Gus know. He'll be in charge of entering athletes for the meet. Names can be changed after the meet, so you will not have to run under someone else's name. Good luck tomorrow. Enjoy the meet. It's a good one.

We've had a whirlwind of meets over the last three days and, thanks to Mike and K.C., we're beginning to catch up with the photos. Expect a few more soon, but in the meantime, all of the results are on the Athletic.net tab to the right.

Meet Schedule This Weekend

This will be quite a week of competition for the Varsity distance athletes. Thursday the entire team will compete at home in our first Western League meet of the season against Point Loma, which will be a very tough contest for us. Both their boys and girls teams are loaded, so we will have to perform at our best to beat them. Please join us and help cheer our Varsity and JV teams to victory.

On Friday, the distance team will split: Elise Boisvert, Izzy Shepherd, Renee Torre, Ella Ruff and Alex Halter will travel to the prestigious Arcadia Invitational to compete against the nation's best high school runners. This is the greatest gathering of the very best in the country all at one meet. Elise and Alex compete Friday night in the 3200 meters, Izzy will race the following morning in the 1600, and the rest of the girls will join the first two in the Distance Medley Relay in the early afternoon.

Here at home: 5 boys and 4 girls will compete in the Arnie Robinson Invitational at Mesa College beginning with the boys and girls 4 x 1600 meters on Friday night and then again in the Distance Medley Relay on Saturday Night. This meet is reaching a whole new level of prestige with the new Director of Track and Field at Mesa College taking the helm this season. This will be a wonderful opportunity for some of our great athletes that did not qualify for Arcadia to compete at a prestigious level with great competition under the lights on a lightning fast track.

Stay tuned for time schedules, entries, and departure times. Thanks for all the support.

Trabuco Entries for Friday (Meet Friday at 2:45)

(And Practice Thursday at the track at 8:30. This will be an easy jog with an unforgettable racing strategy chat afterwards)

Here are the athletes running in the 1600 on Friday evening/night. This is a fantastic opportunity for EVERYONE to win a race: each race is seeded by time so that each heat will have 25-30 athletes all with PR's within 5 seconds of each other. We'll talk strategy well before the race, so each of you can "run to win". Please remember to sign up for the pot luck and driving using the links below. We always pull off the best trackside potluck in the sport.

Watch THIS!

Since we are running the metric mile on Friday, what better time than to watch some of the greatest mile races in history. For me, the best ever were the three British milers of the 80's. Watch the newcomer Steve Cram take on the World Record Holder Steve Ovett below, and then watch the Great Sebastian Coe by clicking on the "Golden Era of the Mile" on the right. No one on Earth had a more beautiful and lightning quick stride. Go ahead. Dream a little.

Trabuco Hills Friday Night!

Festival of Miles

We are meeting at UCHS on Friday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. to drive up to Trabuco Hills HS for the Distance Carnival that is sure to be a great night for all of our athletes. Meet information is below. Still missing are the heat sheets that tell you what race you're in and the official time schedule. Last year the first 1600 race was just after 6:00 p.m., so this should give us enough time to get there and set up. The schedule and heat sheets will be up on the Trabuco Hills link below later this week. Also, don't forget to sign up to bring something for our "World Class" potluck and track-side banquet.

I'll put the Heat Sheets up as soon as I get them. Every one of you will be in a heat that you can win, so it's all about racing. We'll go over specifics tomorrow. Not at the meet? Follow the results LIVE at finishedresults.com (get the APP!)   Directions to Trabuco Hills High School. Our first race is at 6:15 p.m. beginning with the girls FS 1600's, so we should be prepared if there is some traffic. We will need to be there with plenty of time to prepare for the races.

Practice Wednesday at Liberty Station 10:00 a.m.

It's spring break time and our athletes are are training extremely hard and will be racing out of their minds very soon. Wednesday's easy practice/picnic will be at Liberty Station in the park behind the Ace Hardware. We'll do a nice easy run, drills, exercises, and then enjoy the late morning with grilled hot dogs, Coach Hutsel's famous brisket, and sides and drinks. The drinks and sides are up to us, so plan to bring something to share. See the map below for directions.

I'll have results, pictures and other exciting information about our most recent meets up here very soon. I do need more people taking pictures, though.

Irvine Invitational Entries

Ok, so it's been quite a while since I've updated anything on this site. The track season has officially begun! I will switch over to the track pages this week (to the red tab above, but it should switch over automatically). In the meantime, check out the accepted entries for the meet this weekend. I did my best to balance out the team so that we could get the most entries and also put athletes in races best suited for them at this point in the early season. Please plan on competing this weekend. We put a lot of time and MONEY into these meets, so take advantage of this great opportunity. The sheet below has your race entry and the time of Heat 1 of that event. Good luck this weekend.

What better way to start the build up to a fantastic track season than to watch one of the greatest Olympic 800 meter races in history: The legendary Dave Wottle at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Check it out:

Happy New Year!

We've begun week three of the winter training schedule, and already the kids are fit and ready to move up the chart. Winter training is always a great time to run for the pure joy of running, without the pressures of competition, and at the same time dream a little about the great achievements of the future, thanks to the ambitious training schedule that we're following. Check out the banquet photos below that officially close out our cross country season. I'll be switching over to the "winter training" tab this week. Stay tuned.

Winter Mileage is Here!

Here is the winter training mileage schedule, which begins today! It is important that you choose the appropriate column that is right for you and follow through on it. If you are not willing to do this work, then don't bother coming out for track (unless you're out for a winter sport). Set your goals high and do this for YOU, not me. Remember to keep logging your mileage. The current mileage sweatshirts will be done VERY soon, and we will do something new for the winter mileage. Promise. In the meantime, if you are in town and would like to run with a group, the team is meeting each day at school at 8:30 a.m.

From here we travel to Woodward Park, Fresno, arriving around 2:00 p.m. Here we pick up meet information, jog around the course, buy whatever State Meet "goodies" we deserve (bring some $$. They don't give this stuff away!), and then laugh and relax as we go over any pre-race instructions we may have forgotten about.

After we leave the park, we'll head to the Wyndham Garden Hotel to check in and relax before dinner.

For Dinner, we're off to DiCicco's Italian restaurant at 7:30 for a fun and carbo-filled pasta feed before heading to a good night's rest before the big day.

Get Ready! It's Coming

Click on the Footlocker logo at the top to see the official website for race times and entry information. We will have to get up pretty early to get to the meet on time (my mom lives 40 minutes from the course). We will park in our "double secret" free parking area in the neighborhood behind the course (directions to follow).

We should be home between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Does anyone still want to run who hasn't signed up yet? Registration went up last week from $17 to $40, but if you still want to run, it's worth it. You will need to register online (from site link/logo above) DEADLINE NOVEMBER 26th. You don't want to miss the potentially epic Cranium match Friday night.

Last Chance to Sign Up for Footlocker

It's time to sign up for the Footlocker West Regional Championships. The deadline is Sunday night at 11:59 p.m. Click on the Footlocker logo above to take you to the Footlocker cross country page to sign up. It's a fantastic trip and a great opportunity to run the Mt. SAC course again, this time with 15 other western United States, where we can also watch (and compete with) the fastest runners in the western US. I'll have detailed travel information up after the CIF Championships next Saturday. Info for the CIF meet will go up Sunday night.

Sign up for Footlocker, even if you're not 100% sure you'll do it. It's only $17 and you get an awesome shirt with that. If you sign up after Sunday, the price goes up to $40.

WHEN YOU SIGN UP: Pick the grade level race that you'd like to race in (I'm in the "open" race), and then MAKE SURE that you choose the UCXC team from the scroll menu and list my name (Gimi McCarthy) as the contact person. This way, they can put all of our bibs and shirts together for one person to pick up on Saturday morning (the race is December 2). We will be leaving on Friday, Dec. 1 and staying at my Mom's house (bring sleeping bags). Girls upstairs, boys downstairs. Parents get the bedrooms. Don't miss this! The adults plan to win this year's Cranium Challenge!

Times from Cluster Meet #2

The blue times indicate PR's for the course, which was HUGE for cluster meet #1. That kind of improvement is tough to sustain, but we did quite well as a team for Cluster Meet #2. Only the JV athletes ran, but some PR's were still huge. Congratulations to everyone on the steady improvement throughout this tough period of training. During the JV competition, the varsity athletes ran one of the best team workouts of all time on the new CIF course loop, setting in motion the course to success at the CIF Championships.

New: Check out the great photos by Mike Boisvert on the right column. Thanks, Mike, for all the hard work and beautiful photos!

Course Map for Tomorrow

So.... it's evident I haven't been to this meet in several years. The course is totally different, but still looks awesome. There has been some construction on the site, so changes were inevitable. Check out the map below. The hill is the square in the bottom left corner, so just after the mile mark. This makes it much more like Bronco. We LOVE courses like this, so expect greatness.

UC Girls Win Cluster Meet #1, Dethrone Coronado as League Leader

Out of 54 total runners that competed yesterday for UC in the inaugural Western League Cluster Meet on the Morley Field Course, 47 athletes ran lifetime PR's and Elise Boisvert missed the course record by only four seconds in her impressive win. Storming in close behind, Ella Ruff, Renee Torre, Isabelle Shepherd and Kendall Quesenberry rounded out the scoring that would knock the Coronado girls team off the league favorite podium and their #2 county ranking. The UC athletes demonstrated tremendous teamwork in all six races, pushing each other to impressive lifetime bests. Click the link below for a cool look at the scoring breakdown.

Morley Field Today at 9:00 a.m./Parents at 10:30

We are meeting with the kids today at 9:00 to run over the Western League course so that all of us can be comfortable with it again and ready for competition beginning October 3. After we do some running on the course, we'll need to do a little work on some areas that took a little wear and tear during the heavy rains this winter. Please bring a rake and gloves, if you have these items. Shovels might help too.

Parents: We are meeting at 10:30 to jog the course so that you can learn the course that the kids will be running during our league competitions. Plan to join us with some running shoes on, and experience what the kids have become so expertly skilled at! Hope to see you here today. For directions to Morley Field, click the blue "CROSS COUNTRY" tab above, and then the blue "morley field" tab on the left side of the page. In the meantime, here is the course below.

Woodbridge Driving Information/Race Schedule

We are ready for an exciting evening of races at Woodbridge on Saturday . Most of us will meet at UC at 12:30 p.m. in front of the gym for our drive up to the Silverlakes Sports Park in Norco (directions below). There are three groups listed below with meeting times in black above the group. We need to make sure everyone has a ride and minimize the logistical nightmare of everyone driving at a different time. The race schedule with our tentative entries is listed below.

We are ready to run fast and this is the place to do it. This is one of the most exciting invitational meets in the country and a great learning ground for all levels of competitors. Remember: Don't perseverate on the outcome; it's all about the process. Translation: Your coaches will give you a specific plan. Focus on just that plan: what you have to do during the race. Enjoy the process. See you all Saturday. How many of you will come up to me before your race and say, "Coach, I'm ready!"?

Vaquero Results!

Click on the image below for all the results from Saturday's races. Our team is beginning to look great after a strong season of summer running. The sheets below are training

tools for us to better get an idea of where we need to close ranks in order to be a more effective team. The results show a nice combined result for the girls (boys were unable to merge because of the different distances). Look where you finished and see who you raced with or close to from our team. These races should give us a better idea of who we should be training with, or who we WANT to train with to jump up a notch or two. Congratulations on a great first day of racing. I will be switching over to the Cross Country tab (blue pages) in the next day or so, so stay tuned for that. See you all on Monday after school.

Vaquero Meet Information for Saturday

Here is the meet information for this Saturday. Please meet us in front of the gym at 6:10 a.m. Saturday morning (I know I originally said 6:15, but those 5 minutes will make a difference).. We will carpool to the meet, which is relatively close by. We do need parent drivers to transport the kids, so plan on participating in this wonderful event. Athletes: check out the sheet below as a guide to where you might fit in to the front end of these races. We have to set our goals high, don't we? Remember that this year, our goal is to focus on "PROCESS" and not "OUTCOME", which means you are thinking more about HOW you are going to get there, instead of WHERE you would like to, or need to finish. That means I want to see some BIG risks taken BEFORE half way in the race. No thinking allowed after that point. Let survival instinct get you to the finish line!

A Look Back at 2005 (Great Athletes in the Making)

This was the year of the freshmen with Mac Fleet, Masami Okada, Adam Scherling and Guadalupe Gonzalez among many others taking starring roles for the varsity squad. Injury would cut Mac's season a little short, but the boys would lay a foundation that eventually grew to superstardom and a #1 county ranking by the time they were seniors.

The varsity boys roar through the mile mark in their dominating win against Scripps Ranch. Freshman Mac Fleet won the race in 16:37

Freshman Guad is only the sixth best frosh on the emerging team. Senior Guad is 3rd best in San Diego County and tenth at state. Freshman Macky wins the varsity meet at Morley Field against Scripps in 16:37. Senior Mac is county champion, state champion, and eventual national champion in track.
